Kyle Davis: A True Auburn Man...

I recently did an interview with former Auburn basketball star Kyle Davis for Kyle has battled tough obstacles in search of his NBA dreams and I think this is an article everyone will hopefully enjoy. Kyle Davis is a true Auburn man and one we can all be proud of. In case you forgot Kyle, he left AU in 2004, but not before tearing the Auburn record books apart. He owns every shot block record at AU by a long shot. War Eagle and thank you Kyle!

Cameron Newton named starter....

Head Coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn didn't want to wait until the fall this year to name their starting QB. Both coaches have repeatedly told the media that they wanted to have a starter named after spring practice so that the team could begin to adjust and the starter could start getting the most reps with the first team offense. Today, Gene Chizik named his starting QB as Cameron Newton. "Cam" has been the odds on fan favorite to start since he stepped on campus last January, and with good reason.

Newton is huge for a QB at 6'6" and somewhere around 250 pounds. Not only that, but he moves unbelievably well for a QB his size and has continually been clocked in the 4.5 range in the forty yard dash. He'll be very tough for defenders to bring down when they can get to him and when plays break down, he can tuck it and pick up big yardage for the offense with his feet.

He's not just an athlete playing QB though. He's got a cannon for an arm and can make any of the throws he needs to make to be a big time QB in the SEC. If you're judging potential for Cam Newton, the sky is truly the limit. He'll be able to hit receivers and make the plays with his arm that Gus Malzahn needs, but he'll bring the added dimension of being able to run that should give SEC teams fits all year long. For more on the story, Scott Reaves at has a nice report. Check it out below....

Luke Cothron nearing a decision....

Big time power forward Luke Cothron, who is ranked 33rd in the Rivals top 150 players is nearing his decision. Cothron 6'8" and 210 pounds has reportedly narrowed his choices down to AU, AL and Marquette and the rumors are that Auburn will be the school he chooses. On Saturday, Cothron is supposed to make a visit to the Plains to meet with Tony Barbee and the rest of the basketball staff to talk and hopefully finalize his future in college basketball. Scott Reaves at the Auburn Eagle has the full report that you can check out below....

Tiger Prowl in Montgomery....

Tiger Prowl was out in full force in Montgomery Tuesday. Football coaches Trooper Taylor, Curtis Luper and Tommy Thigpin were there to greet approximately 100 or so fans at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery, AL as part of their Tiger Prowl tour. The coaches rode in style in a rock star type tour bus, decked out with Auburn murals and a picture of Gene Chizik on the back. The coaches were all very gracious with their time, signing autographs and taking pictures for over an hour, before giving short speaches that fired up the crowd. Coach Luper led everyone in a big "War Eagle" and Trooper Taylor spoke about family and what it means to be part of the Auburn family.

The Tiger Prowl made it's first stop in Mobile and it's second stop in Montgomery on Tuesday. They will make two more stops through the state of Alabama, one in Birmingham on Wednesday and the other in Huntsville as well. If you haven't been to one of these Tiger Prowl pep rallys, I highly recommend it. Auburn is asking for everyone who is a part of the Auburn family to come out and show their support and this is the best time to get autographs and pictures made with the assistant coaches if you are into that kind of thing....Me personally, I got Trooper Taylor and the gang to sign my Trooper Towel that is now hanging proudly in my Auburn flavored office, where the desk of the Mayor resides.

I was also able to get a ton of great pictures of the tour bus and the coaches. You can check some of them out below....

On the Recruiting Trail: Spring Edition...

"On The Recruiting Trail", The regularly updated Auburn football recruiting report by Scott Reaves and yours truely is up at the Auburn Eagle. You can check it out below and it starts like this....

It's WAY too early to be trying to figure out exactly who Auburn will fill it's 2011 recruiting class with. Tiger Prowl, the Auburn coaching staff's annual recruiting trip across the state and southern region is just getting cranked up this week. Big Cat Weekend, the famed recruiting blitz that brought in so many top prospects last year, doesn't get under way for at least another month. However, for recruiting junkies who want to know who Auburn will sign in December and February, I guess it's never too soon to try and figure it out.

Ben Tate a Texan....

Ben Tate, running back from Auburn was selected by the Texans today. Tate, who improved his stock in the NFL draft with an outstanding performance at the NFL combine was selected Friday night, 58th overall in the second round by the Houston Texans.

Tate, 5'11" and 220 lbs ran for 1362 yards and 10 TD's as a senior and also finished his Auburn career with well over 3000 yards rushing with 3321 total, including 24 TD's and finished 5th all-time on Auburn's storied rushing list.

Tate joins Steve Slaton, Chris Brown, Arian Foster, Chris Henry and Ryan Moats on a Texans squad that ranked 30th in the NFL in rushing last season. Starter Steve Slaton was injured early in the season last year and the Texans had trouble finding a running back capable of being a marquee back. Tate hopes to become that player for the Texans and should help bolster their ground attack immediately. At the very least, Tate should get his chance and plenty of reps in the rotation when the NFL season begins this fall.

Tony Barbee Signs His First Player....

On Thursday, Tony Barbee signed his first player as coach at Auburn University. Josh Langford, a 6'6", 210 lb forward from Lee High-School in Huntsville, Alabama signed his letter of intent to play for Barbee's Tigers.

Langford is arguably the top basketball prospect in the state of Alabama this year and chose AU over offers from several big time schools, including Cincinatti, West Virginia, Ole Miss, UGA and others. Langford is ranked #1 on the Birmingham News Super Seniors List for the state of Alabama and was the MVP of the AL/MS High-School All-Star game in March.

Langford was also the leader of his Lee High-School basketball team and led them to the 5A State Championship, where he was the MVP of that game as well. He carved up opponents during Lee's championship season, averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds per game. Langford will more than likely play small forward at Auburn, is already qualified and will enroll at AU this summer.

Tony Barbee had this to say about Langford:

"I'm excited that Josh has decided to join the Auburn Family. He is a huge recruit for me and for the program as we try to establish Auburn as one of the programs to beat on the floor and in recruiting in the Southeast. Getting the best player in the state of Alabama in the Class of 2010 was very important to establish that we are going to go after the best, and Josh is the best in Alabama this year. He comes from a great family with his mom, dad and sister. They are a great family, with a great support system around him so we are getting a great kid as well.”

The 2011 AU Football Commitment List To Date...

Here is a list of the current football commitments Auburn has to date. As time goes by and Auburn gets more commits, I will update this list with my scouting report so stay tuned....

OL/C - Reese Dismukes - 6'3" - 275 - Spanish Fort, AL - Chose AU over offers from AL, FSU, Ole Miss, Ga Tech and others. Ranked as one of the top 3 center prospects in America by most scouts and could end up being THE top center prospect by the end of his senior year. ESPN 150 Watch List. Dismukes will graduate in December, enroll at AU in January and go through spring practice.

A Short Interview From The News

OL/G - Thomas O'Reilly - 6'3" - 315 - Marietta, GA (Pope) - Chose AU over offers from FSU, Ga Tech, Maryland, Miss St., NC State and several others. Considered to be one of the country's top guard prospects. Grew up an UGA fan but they didn't offer. That left the door open for other teams to get in on him and AU came out the winner. ESPN 150 Watch List. O'Reilly will graduate in December, enroll at AU in January and go through spring practice.

Thomas O'Reilly Highlight

OL/G - Spencer Region - 6'6" - 330 - Somerville, AL (Cullman) - Chose AU over several big time offers including AL, FSU, UGA, Penn St., TN, Ole Miss and several others. Region is not only one of the biggest prospects in the country, but he's one of the best too. He was set to announce his commitment to Alabama until the infamous "phone call went wrong" scandal with Nick Saban and Auburn picked up what may turn out to be one of it's most valuable commitments of the year. Region is recruiting hard for AU and helped AU get O'Reilly and Dismukes. ESPN 150 Watch List. Spencer will graduate in December, enroll at AU in January and go through spring practice.

Spencer Region Highlight

S - Anthony Swain - 6'3" - 215 - 4.6 forty - Gadsden, AL (Gadsden) - Swain is one of the state of Alabama's best prospects in 2011 and has tons of upside. He chose AU over offers from TN, KY, S. Miss and several others that were showing him strong interest. Swain is being recruited to play safety at AU but really has potential to play a number or positions because of his size and speed. Swain is a very good addition to the class.

S - Izauea (Isiah) Lanier - 6'1" - 190 - 4.5 forty - East Mississippi Community College - Lanier had to go the juco route to get his grades in order after originally signing with AU in 09, out of Gordo High-School. Lanier is an outstanding prospect that coach Chizik and Lolley like alot. Other schools didn't really even get a chance to recruit Izauea though. He committed to AU on the first day after signing day 2010. He'll be in Auburn in December, go through spring practice and have 3 years to play 3.

Dismukes is a Tiger!

On Wednesday Auburn picked up its fifth commitment of this recruiting season. This one by way of Spanish Fort's, Reese Dismukes. Dismukes is considered by most recruiting analysts as one of, if not THE top center prospect in America this year. Reese is currently tipping the scales at 6'3", 275 pounds and still has some room to grow. He had narrowed his choices down to the two in state schools Auburn and Alabama, after receiving offers from AU, AL, FSU, Ga Tech, Ole Miss and several others. Auburn however, came out the winner on Wednesday with Dismukes and has now received commitments from three of the best interior offensive linemen in the country. Dismukes has joined Thomas O'Reilly, considered a top guard prospect, as well as big Spencer Region who is highly touted himself. The three big and talented offensive linemen have made a big splash for Gene Chizik's Auburn football Tigers and have already been dubbed...."The Bash Brothers". Ha! Good job and thanks to whoever made this pic. War Eagle!

Thomas O'Reilly is a Tiger!

Auburn picked up it's fourth commitment for the 2011 class today. Thomas O'Reilly, one of the top offensive line prospects in the country and possibly the top offensive line prospect in Georgia committed to play for the Tigers. O'Reilly hails from Pope high-school in Marietta, Georgia and is a massive 6'3", 315 pounds. O'Reilly chose Auburn over offers from several top programs across the country including FSU, Ga Tech, Maryland, Miss St., NC State and several others. O'Reilly says he always dreamed of playing football in the SEC and the family atmosphere he felt on his trips to Auburn was too much for him to turn down. O'Reilly will get a head start on his college career, as he plans to graduate high-school in December and enroll at Auburn in January so he can go through spring practice. O'Reilly is not only known for having great footwork for a player his size, but also claims a 340 pound bench press and a 585 pound squat. He's also a good student and shouldn't have any trouble qualifying. He joins Spencer Region, Anthony Swain and Izauea Lanier as the first four Auburn Tiger commitments for the 2011 class. Welcome to the family Thomas! War Eagle!

Sad story from the college football world...

Here is a truly tragic story I found on the web this weekend. This one from Notre Dame. Matt James, a Notre Dame football recruit, fell to his death at a hotel on Friday. According to the story, James fell from a fifth story Days Inn hotel room while vacationing for spring break in Panama City. According to witnesses James had too much to drink and was leaning over the rail "shaking his finger" at people in the next room. That's when he fell over the rail to his unfortunate death. James was an All-State player in Ohio and was Brian Kelly's first signee.

My heart and prayers go out to the James family. This story touched me personally because many of us have been in this very situation, including myself. Underage...Partying in Panama City...Too much to drink...Leaning over the rail etc...

For those of you who have not been there, most of the hotels (I stayed in the Holiday Inn both years I went) are built in a "C" shape so that you can see and talk to the other guests. I saw several people almost fall and guys jumping from balcony to balcony. Obviously, if the hotel catches you you'll get in trouble, but you're talking about watching 5000 16 to 24 year olds, twenty-four hours a day on spring break....That's an impossible task.

So when I saw this story, I decided to post it because it hit home with me and I knew it would hit home with a lot of yall too. You can view the actual article from Chicago's WGN News below.

Shon Coleman: Heart of a Champion....

I was recently given the opportunity to have a one on one conversation with Shon Coleman's mother, Mrs. Turnstall. During our discussions she was very generous with her time and information so that I could relay it to the Auburn family. Please check out the article and donate if you can and as always please continue to pray for Shon. He's doing a lot better, but he's not completely out of the woods yet. You can read the full article below on the best free Auburn site on the internet, Check Below....
