An Early Look at the Offense....

The 2010 version of the Auburn offense should be just as good, if not better than the 2009 offense that finished 16th overall in total offense. There are of course, two big sets of shoes to fill. Ben Tate takes his 1,362 yards and 10 TDs to the NFL. Chris Todd, the often criticized Auburn QB is gone as well and takes his 145.73 QB rating, 2,612 yards and 22 TDs with him.

Other than those two spots though, Auburn is returning just about everybody. The offensive line should be the strength of the offense as they return 4 of 5 starters, all of which will be seniors in 2010. The receivers which should be loaded with talent and depth, will be a strength of the team as well and will help out whoever the QB is this fall tremendously. The odds-on favorite to replace Chris Todd as Auburns signal caller in 2010 is highly touted Cameron Newton. "Cam" is big (250 lbs), he's got a rocket for an arm and he's incredibly fast for a QB. When he gets in trouble, or when a play breaks down he can do tons of damage to defenses with his running ability. If he doesn't win the job, the likely starter will be Neil Caudle. Caudle is a senior who came in second to Todd in last years QB race and he is the ultimate team player.

At the running back spot, one of two things will happen in my opinion. Either "Super" Mario Fannin will finally put it all together and have an unbelievable year....OR...it will be running by committee. Gus Malzahn and Gene Chizik have both stated to the media that Fannin has been moved to RB from the HB position and they think he can carry the load for the Tigers this year. Either way, with Auburns veteran offensive line, the running backs should be able to equal last years total of 2,756 yards. The opinion of this blogger is that Fannin will have a good year, probably over 1000 yards, but the freshman pheonom Michael Dyer will be hard to keep off the field. By mid season he should be getting several touches and Onterio McCalebb should be getting several as well. So, let's take a look at what Auburns offensive depth chart could look like in 2010. (Warning: It's still early and this is an opinion)

  • QB - Cam Newton/Neil Caudle/Clint Moseley or Barrett Trotter
  • RB - Mario Fannin/Onterio McCalebb or Michael Dyer
